18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S USM Zoom Lens 1 x 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S USM Zoom Lens
People who shoot wildlife or surfing competitions use long lenses to bring that distant person or animal up close for a good look. Telephoto lenses let you see the details of something far off. Telephoto lenses flatten perspective. They make different elements in the picture look closer together than they really are. You've seen this in movies where the hero seems to be walking down an incredibly crowded street with people squeezed right up next to him. You get this effect by standing well back and shooting with a long telephoto lens. The magnification of a telephoto can be used for dramatic effect. For example, you may want to shoot a twilight shot that includes the full moon in the background. The moon will appear larger and closer if you shoot with a long lens. You can also zoom in on objects that aren't so far away. While a telephoto lens usually will not focus close enough to be a true macro lens (used for very detailed close-ups), it will often enable you to take interesting close-ups or details. At close range, the shallow depth of field of a telephoto will also help the item stand out from its background. On even normal-sized subjects, you can minimize distracting backgrounds using depth of field. If possible, move your subject away from the background and adjust your focus to soften the background but keep the subject sharp. Manipulating perspective is a useful creative tool. If you want to associate two things that are separated, move back and shoot them with your telephoto. This will make them appear closer together. To be creative, you need to know your equipment, what it can do, and what it can't. The telephoto lens is one of your most creative tools. By learning its characteristics and visual effects, you can use this tool to increase the impact of your videos and/ or pictures.

Canon 1236B001 EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi 10.1 Megapixel DSLR with Canon 18-55mm EF-S Lens ( Black ) Reviews

Masood Akhtar's Review from Huffman, TX: - January 5, 2009

I wanted to surprise my wife with a new camera and chose this one because my kids' friends use it for professional photography. My wife now uses it for work and leisure and has only great things to say about it.
James Sandler's Review from San Diego, CA: - January 5, 2009

I bought this camera as a gift for my wife. She got it all set up right away and loves it, especially the large screen and auto focus.
Tanushe Jakupi's Review from Staten Island, NY: - December 9, 2008

I just use this camera for fun and it's great.
Julie Desiderio's Review from Havertown, PA: - November 17, 2008

I recently took lots of pictures in France with this camera. It's very good, I like it a lot. My brother-in-law owns the predecessor model so I based my decision on his recommendation and am pleased I did so!
Stephen Klinger's Review from Power City, PA: - November 17, 2008

The picture quality with this camera is very good. I really like the features with the night shots, etc. I recently took a trip to NY and got some pretty pictures of Seneca Lake and the moon by adjusting the light and exposure settings.
Hank's Review from IL: - October 24, 2008

Just an all-around great camera.
Roger's Review from OH: - October 24, 2008

Perfect camera!!
Jane's Review from MI: - October 24, 2008

Lens is good and picture quality is fantastic.
Gabriella Suchkinistin's Review from Stone Mountain, Georgia: - July 19, 2007

I have been researching this camera for a few months now. I finally, decided to spend the money and purchase the Canon Rebel. I wanted a camera that takes great pictures of my children. This camera is worth every penny. It takes perfect, clear pictures. I was afraid that I wouldn't know how to use all that it offers or be able to figure out all the buttoms. All I had to do is read a little and I was ready to take pictures. I love how I can attach a tripod to the camera, set it on the timer and take a picture of the four of us. We have never been able to take pictures with both my husband and I in the picture. I would recommend this camera to anyone. You will not be disappointed!
Zachary Mesiah's Review from UNKNOWN: - July 19, 2007

I bought this camera because of traveling. I went on a trip in October and my other camera my Nikon let me down completely. It refused to take picture and when it would they would come out with saturation and negativity in them. I was very disatisfied I immediately got home called and returned the camera. When I got back to my home state I went "camera hunting" and saw this camera, ordered it and since then (about 5 months ago) it has not let me down one time, aside from the battery dieing which is my own minor fault. I won't get into technical details, but it's sufficient to say this camera is FABULOUS for amateurs. I think this is much better then my Nikon, with picture quality.
cf endres's Review from beaumont, ca: - May 3, 2007

this may be my next camera
John Wong's Review from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah: - April 30, 2007

The EOS 400D digital camera is very handy and easy to operate. For beginner, I suggest a handy booklet on how to take photos on manual focusing( the manual included is complicated and confusing and also, not many examples listed). With such inclusion, many will be attracted. Thank you
Ozkul's Review from Norman, OK: - March 8, 2007

This camera blows my mind. It has features and functions I never would have dreamed a camera to have...Now I have to say, I'm "old" (56) so I'm used to more dinosaur like cameras. But the Canon Rebel XTi is the absolute coolest thing I've ever used in photography. And, I'm just now learning it. It is like buying a Ferrari and only going 60! There is so much more this machine can do. IT is a dream camera, for me. I can hardly wait to figure it all out!!! lol
Neal's Review from San Antonio, Texas: - March 8, 2007

Has performed admirably. After only making the step up to a digital SLR now (I'd been holding off as long as I could to get as good a performance as possible), it's lived up to every expections.
Dave's Review from Wichita, KS: - March 8, 2007

I still have the SD200 I bought a year or two ago, but the XTI is great. I am still learning all the settings. Now I'm starting to play with the RAW and continous shooting modes. I can't wait until nature starts getting it's color back to go shooting in some of the parks around town. A friend of mine has an XT and his photos from last summer look great, I can't imagine what the XTI's will look like. All I can say is buy THE biggest Memory Card you can find. If you shoot in RAW + L, it eats them alive. I had to wait for my Ultra II 2 gig and ended up using a standard 1 gig for a while. Now I just need to decide if I should shell out for more cards or to get an IS USM lens. I can't say enough about it. Even when I screw up a shot, like when my dog bumps my leg, I can still see great detail. Canon did a great job with this camera and if you register it like I did, they answer even the rookiest of questions quicker than you would expect. If you are looking for an upgrade from a point and shoot to a SLR, this is for you. If you are already familiar with Canon's Menus and Programs, that's just icing.
Carl's Review from Seaside, CA: - March 8, 2007

The Canon xti 10.1mp is easy to use, lenes from my canon rebel 35 mm camera interchange nicely.
Min Park's Review from Albuquerque, NM: - March 8, 2007

Picked this up recently and love it and great DSLR to learn from. You can never go wrong with Canon point to shoot to SLR cameras including ZR camcorders too. CANON all the way
Yuvak's Review from Richmond , CA: - March 8, 2007

The canon digital Rebel it's a wonderful camera, so many functions that I will really have to study on them, there's just one thing that I'm not sure if I don't know or it's like that, do any of you know if I can use the LCD screen to see the images when I'm taking the picture, or do I always have to use the visor? It's a great product !
Dennis's Review from Austin, TX: - March 8, 2007

I've had the Rebel, the Rebel XT, and now this Rebel XTi. The design just keeps getting better and better. I love the new bigger screen. It's so much easier to see the camera settings. I highly recommend this camera.
Jenin's Review from Alexandria, Mn: - March 8, 2007

Received my XTi last week. I'm just learning to use this camera and using it in the auto mode only for now. The lens is good for a beginner like me. The picture quality is much better than my old Olympus Point and Shoot (16 years old!). I plan to purchase an additional lens for sports shots soon. I know I will enjoy this camera for years to come. It's easy to operate in the auto mode, yet has many advanced features as well for someone more experienced. Love the large LCD screen. I researched for months before making a camera purchase. For my budget range, this one had all the rave reviews. I love it! Great customer service from Fotoconnection! Ordered product on Sunday before President's Day. Received my camera by Wednesday. I was hesitant about making such an expensive purchase on the internet, but the transaction was perfect. I plan to order more photography accessories from Fotoconnection.
George's Review from Edgewood, WA: - December 5, 2006

This is probably the best entry level SLR camera.....cheaper than the NIkon D200 and Sony's entry level. If you are new to professional photography, this is the camera. I've done tons of research from other source and so far the only top competitor that this camera do have are the Nikon D200, Nikon D80 and Sony Alpha.

When purchasing a digital camera, you must decide on the type of camera that is suitable for how you are using it, the life of the battery, how much memory is required, which type of lenses are needed, and etc. This guide will assist you in buying a digital camera and the necessary accessories.

Types of Cameras:

There are many different types of cameras.  Depending on how often and for what purpose you are using the camera, there is a camera out there for all users.

Starter Cameras:
For users who are looking to start digital photography, but don’t want to spend a lot of money, this is the type of camera for you. A decent point-and-shoot camera should be suitable for 4”x6” photo prints.

Amateur Cameras:
For users that are knowledgeable about digital photography or want a high-quality camera to learn with, this category is best for you. These cameras offer ease of use with very high specification features, but not a large range of controls that you can get from professional cameras. Typically, you can make up to 11”x17” photo prints with these cameras.

Professional Cameras:
These cameras are intended for professionals to use. The lower-end professional cameras have a similar resolution to some high-end amateur cameras. The main difference is that, they have more elaborate setting control, better lenses, and better flash options. Most of the time, you can use lenses from your older SLR (Single Lens Reflex) film cameras. The resolution on these cameras could exceed 21 megapixels (21 million pixels). This type of camera is intended to produce very high quality prints for newspapers, magazines, and books, or for users who like to have control over how their pictures will look.

Power Conservation Tips:

Turn off the LCD:
When you are not using it, turn the LCD off. If you are low on power and want to make some more pictures, turn the LCD off and use the viewfinder instead. Doing so will increase the battery life of the camera, as LCD screens will eat up a lot of power.

Stop the Zoom:
Some cameras automatically release the lens when you turn the camera on. Unfortunately, it drains power significantly. To prevent this from happening you can change the settings to the sleep mode.

Turn off the Flash:
If you think the lighting is adequate for pictures, turn off the flash. Flashes will consume a large amount of energy, which is wasted if not in use.

Plug it in:
Some cameras have power adapter which allows you to plug in your camera to a wall socket.  This will allow you to save your battery power when you are using the camera near a power socket.

Accessories to boost your Digital Experience:

Batteries:
Batteries are an important resource to digital cameras because if there is no power left, you can miss a special moment. If your camera uses disposable alkaline batteries, you should get a set of rechargeable batteries, thus saving you a lot of money in the long run, compared to purchasing new disposable batteries each time. For cameras that use Lithium Ion, it is suggested to purchase a backup battery for instances when you will be away from home for a period longer than 2 hours.

Memory Cards:
Memory card are equivalent to film in digital cameras. Each type of camera will use a different type of card, so make sure to check which card is compatible with your camera. Secure Digital (SD) is currently the most popular because it has become relatively cheap. Capacities of up to 16GB are currently available. Remember, you can never have too much memory, so invest in a larger capacity memory card when you purchase your digital camera. Here is a chart to help you make a decision on the memory card size right for yourself.

Tripods/Monopods:
If you have problems taking sharp, clear images, it could be because your hands were shaking. In order to solve the problem, you can get a tripod or monopod. It is important to keep the cameras steady if you want perfect pictures. A tripod is also important when you want to tweak the settings and take long exposure shots.

Card Readers:
Card readers are essential for any serious digital photographer. Instead of transferring photos directly from the camera, you can use a card reader to transfer them from your memory card straight to your computer. Doing so will conserve the camera’s batteries when transferring pictures.

Cases and Bags:
While digital cameras may be pricey, they can still break if dropped, so be sure to you protect your investment with either a case or bag. Cases make it safer and easier to carry. Cases can also protect your camera from sand, dust, dirt, and water. They are available in all types of sizes and styles. You can even purchase an Underwater Housing Case, allowing you to use your digital camera in water. These cases are more expensive and are only designed for some models. The cases usually come with cameras straps to put the camera around your neck or wrist. This provides an extra layer of protection for your camera, by preventing it from falling to the ground.

Lenses and Flash:
The quality of your photos depends on the quality of your lens. Flashes can help improve the brightness of your pictures. On most cameras, the lenses are built onto the camera, so you don’t have any upgradeability of the lens. But, if you own an SLR camera, you can replace the lens with a higher quality one, with better zoom or a different focal length. Flashes assist you when you are taking photos in low light settings. Most digital cameras have an internal flash that works fine for normal use, but you might want more light for the best possible results.

Important Camera Features:

Resolution:
A photograph is measured in the number of pixels in the picture. A pixel is a tiny dot of color. In digital photography, quality of the photo is  megapixels. One-megapixel is the same as one million pixels. Nowadays, most cameras have more than 6 Megapixels, which is more than sufficient for a beginner’s camera.

Zoom:
Zoom is an important factor because it helps you get closer to the subject. There are two types of zoom available in digital cameras, digital and optical zoom. Digital zoom is a way of magnifying the picture by processing techniques. Unfortunately, digital zoom lowers the quality of the image a little. Optical zoom is where the magnification is done by using the camera’s lens. It would be ideal to use the Optical zoom over digital zoom because of the quality difference.
