In addition to having a traditional foil shaver mechanism, the Cruzer3 boasts a unique trimming unit that Braun says is perfect for both the big and small details that make a great facial hair style. The unit is also rechargeable, and it can be used in the shower -- both features that make it great for travelers, and for guys who are always in the rush in the morning. While it's true that the Cruzer3 is a tool for hipsters to keep up their cutting-edge look, it's actually strikes a good balance between being a versatile styling tool and a solid everyday shaver.
The Cruzer3's design is pure Braun, with a sturdy feel in the hand. The rubberized hand-grip keeps things under control in the shower, and the casing's slight bend puts your hand in the right position for shaving. A simple "Run" button is cleverly placed right where your thumb rests, while charging is handled via an unobtrusive little adapter plug at the base of the unit. On the flip-side of the Cruzer3 there's an extending cutter unit that slides into place and extends beyond the shaving foil. We really liked that the styling cutter spins 360 degrees, allowing you to choose a small or large cutter. Braun says the wider cutter is for shaping larger areas, i.e. making the rough draft of your facial creation. Use it for shaping sideburns, mustaches and partial short beards. Meanwhile, the small cutter is designed for finishing the fine details and creating precise contours.
On top of the Cruzer3 you'll find a a fairly standard shaver foil set-up. The foil is wide and highly flexible and most testers found it pretty effective at giving a quick shave. It conforms nicely to facial features and in most cases gave an acceptably close, but not razor close, shave. If it's been a few days since your last shave you'll want to start with one of the trimming blades, as we didn't find the shaving foil especially good at cutting longer hairs. The shaving foil can be easily removed and Braun ships a handy brush with the Cruzer3 for cleaning the cutting block. Also, because the Cruzer3 is waterproof, it's no problem to simply run the cutting block under water for speedy cleaning.
For bearded aficionados, Braun also ships a trimming attachment with the Cruzer3. It clips into place easily and integrates with the wide cutting blade. There are four trimmer height settings so you can touch up those nappy areas and get your beard to a uniform length.
By leaving the unit on continuously, we estimated about 30 minutes of total cordless shaving time before the unit required a charge. That's pretty good for something you might use three or four minutes a day. Keep in mind, though, that the styling blades pull quite a bit more power than the foil shaver, so your mileage may vary when you're crafting your next fashion statement.
